How to flush the toilet without touching the flush lever.

If you are in a public toilet and the flushing mechanism is that which requires you to flush with your hand, you don't want to be touching the lever with your hand. There is no knowing what germs and other microscopic creepy crawlies you might catch. Besides germs, there is bound to be some lavatorial residue on the lever left behind by the previous user. What then is the best thing to do?

There are actually two options. My favourite is to use my foot to flush. My foot? Yes my foot. It is a good method because you achieve your objective of flushing the toilet but  you do not get your hands dirty, Additional benefits are that  you get to stretch your legs and test their level of flexibility.

The alternative method which I personally find not too challenging is that of using your elbow to depress the lever. You need to take care though because you might hurt your elbow in the process. Due to the fact that your arm is not as powerful as your leg, more effort will have to be exerted by your elbow on the metal lever than on your leg and if not done carefully, it may hurt the elbow. For those not courageous or brave enough to put a foot on it, so to speak, this however remains a better option.

Please do not consider wrapping your handkerchief around the handle so that you can use your hand to flush. That is not an option. You are still going to handle the germs and/or residue at one point or the other when you have to either put the handkerchief in your pocket or take it out. So the wise thing to do is to keep your hands out of it. Happy flushing!
